At least 13 people, most or all of them children, died after a boat capsized in the Ganga River in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Tuesday evening, officials said. The vessel overturned in the Raghopur police station area while carrying villagers to a feast or Hindu festival in a nearby village.
Residents rushed to the water in darkness and rescued several passengers before police, local divers and the State Disaster Response Force joined search operations. Officials gave differing rescue totals: Reuters reported that six people were rescued, while District Magistrate Varsha Singh was quoted by ANI as saying seven had been rescued by Tuesday night. Survivors were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and announced payments of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the family of each person killed and ₹50,000 for each injured passenger. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced an additional ₹4 lakh for each bereaved family and directed officials to expedite rescue work and treatment for the injured.
