The USS Abraham Lincoln returned to its home port in San Diego on Thursday, reuniting thousands of sailors and Marines with their families after an extended deployment that included operations in the Middle East during the war in Iran.

The aircraft carrier left San Diego in November for a Pacific deployment and operated in the South China Sea before being redirected to the Middle East after the Iran war began in late February. Middle East Eye and the Los Angeles Times described the full deployment as lasting 321 days, while France 24 reported that the ship spent a record 265 uninterrupted days at sea.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth boarded the carrier at sea Wednesday and told its crew that the strike group had accomplished what “no other carrier strike group has ever done,” according to Middle East Eye. The ship carried about 5,000 sailors and Marines.

Families gathered at the waterfront Thursday to welcome crew members home. Some people also protested conditions aboard the carrier and the war in Iran, KPBS reported. Several outlets cited reports of deteriorating conditions during the prolonged mission, including shortages of food and basic supplies and concerns about crew members’ mental health and morale.
