Hyundai Motor inaugurated its Pune manufacturing plant on Wednesday, adding an initial annual capacity of 170,000 vehicles as part of a broader expansion in India.

The facility, acquired from General Motors in 2023 and converted with an investment of about 1 trillion won ($747 million), is scheduled to increase capacity to 320,000 vehicles by 2030. Hyundai Motor India said it would invest an additional 40 billion rupees in the plant, bringing its total investment there to 110 billion rupees. Combined with Hyundai’s Chennai operations, the Pune plant brings the automaker’s annual Indian production capacity to nearly 1 million vehicles.

The Venue compact SUV will be the first model produced at Pune, supplying India and about 30 export markets across Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Hyundai also plans to raise the share of locally sourced components from 83% to 92%. The plant includes an engine shop capable of producing 150,000 engines annually.

The opening followed Hyundai Motor Group’s announcement Tuesday that it plans to invest $15.5 billion in India from 2026 through 2032. The program covers expanded manufacturing, research and development, supplier localization and future mobility technologies, and includes about $700 million for Hyundai’s Indian research center. The group said it would establish a dedicated Indian investment entity to carry out the plan.

Including Kia’s Anantapur facility, Hyundai Motor Group currently has annual production capacity of about 1.42 million vehicles in India.
