Jeffrey Archer, the bestselling British novelist and former Conservative politician whose career was marked by literary success and political scandal, died Monday at his London home. He was 86.

His publisher, HarperCollins, said Archer died “suddenly and peacefully” between writing sessions. His final novel, *Adam and Eve*, was scheduled for publication Tuesday. He had appeared at a sold-out event at London’s Leicester Square Theatre the day before his death.

Archer sold more than 300 million books worldwide during a writing career spanning five decades. His best-known novels included his 1976 debut, *Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less*, and *Kane and Abel*, published in 1979. His books were sold in 119 countries, according to HarperCollins.

Before becoming a full-time author, Archer was elected to Parliament in 1969. He later served as deputy chairman of the Conservative Party under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and entered the House of Lords as Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare. He retired from the upper chamber in 2024.

His political career was overshadowed by his 2001 conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice, stemming from lies told during a libel case against the *Daily Star*. Sentenced to four years in prison, he served two and later chronicled the experience in *A Prison Diary*.

Kate Elton, chief executive of HarperCollins UK and Archer’s editor, called him “the master storyteller and an editor’s dream.” Archer is survived by his wife, Mary, and their two sons.
