Tropical Storm Isaias formed early Wednesday over the southern Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to strengthen into the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season before approaching the U.S. Gulf Coast later this week.

The National Hurricane Center said Isaias had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving east-northeast at 8 mph. Its center was about 285 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, and 580 miles southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Initial projections showed the storm potentially making landfall between eastern Louisiana and the western Florida Panhandle, although its exact track, timing and intensity remained uncertain. The hurricane center warned of an increasing risk of dangerous winds and storm surge along parts of the northern Gulf Coast and urged residents from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle to monitor forecasts and prepare.

Heavy rain is expected along portions of the Gulf Coast and across much of the Southeast from Friday through the weekend. The hurricane center forecast 3 to 6 inches in some areas, with isolated totals of up to 10 inches, creating a risk of flash, urban and isolated river flooding. Dangerous surf and rip currents are also possible.

If Isaias reaches hurricane strength, it would be the latest first Atlantic hurricane of a season since 1905, according to the Associated Press.
