Saudi Arabia extended the closure of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh until October 17 after successive attacks over the weekend killed 14 people and injured more than 300, according to Saudi authorities.
A missile struck the airport on Saturday, killing 13 people and injuring more than 300. On Sunday, another projectile hit Terminal 4, starting a fire that killed one person and injured 11. Saudi air defences also intercepted a cruise missile near the airport. The dead included Saudi and foreign nationals, while Taiwan said one of its citizens was hospitalized after an attack.
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis claimed responsibility for the Saturday strike and said they had carried out several attacks using ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. The group also claimed attacks on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and two Saudi Aramco facilities. Saudi authorities confirmed an incident at Dammam airport and began assessing damage, but did not confirm the other claims.
The airport closure prompted flight cancellations and forced some travellers to reroute through Jeddah or travel by road. Riyadh schools moved to remote learning, while Britain, the United States, Malaysia and Taiwan issued or tightened travel advice.
The Houthis also said Saudi strikes in Yemen killed a child and injured six people in Sanaa. Saudi Arabia’s coalition said it would respond firmly. U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington was considering whether to join Saudi military action against the Houthis.
