Atlético Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday after Pablo Barrios scored inside the opening minute and Leny Yoro was sent off in the second half.
Barrios put the hosts ahead after 50 seconds, converting Alex Baena’s cutback despite Ayden Heaven’s attempt to keep the shot out. United’s Bryan Mbeumo fired narrowly wide, while Atlético’s Alejandro Grimaldo struck the frame of the goal with a free kick.
Johnny Cardoso also had an Atlético goal disallowed following a VAR review for a handball by Marcos Llorente in the buildup. Julián Alvarez hit the post early in the second half as the Spanish side continued to threaten.
United responded with several chances, including a Bruno Fernandes effort that hit the crossbar. Their comeback attempt was damaged in the 74th minute when Yoro was dismissed after a VAR review ruled that he had brought down Jonathan David as the last defender.
Five minutes later, goalkeeper Senne Lammens denied David, but substitute Ademola Lookman converted the rebound to secure Atlético’s victory. Jan Oblak later saved from Matheus Cunha.
The result gave Atlético their first points of the league phase after an opening loss at Liverpool. United’s winless run extended to five matches across all competitions.
