Fighting intensified across Yemen on Tuesday as government forces struck Houthi positions in Taiz and the rebels reported airstrikes in several areas under their control.
The Yemeni military said its aircraft carried out nine strikes against Houthi fighters and equipment in Taiz province, while clashes continued south of Taiz city. A military spokesperson separately claimed government forces had conducted 2,200 operations nationwide in 24 hours, “neutralised” about 1,200 Houthi fighters and destroyed or disabled more than 440 vehicles. Those figures were not independently confirmed.
Taiz remained encircled by Houthi forces, with road blockades worsening food shortages. The local office of Yemen’s Human Rights Ministry said Houthi shelling killed six civilians in rural Taiz on Sunday and injured 17 people in the city during the following 24 hours. A local rights group also accused the Houthis of damaging rooms at a private hospital.
The UN humanitarian office said 216,000 people had been displaced in Yemen since August, including more than 172,000 from Taiz province, and that about 143,000 people had received emergency assistance.
Houthi-run al-Masirah television said strikes also hit Kamaran island, Qanawis district near Hodeida and Jawf province, blaming Saudi Arabia. Riyadh did not immediately comment. The Houthis also claimed to have downed a Saudi drone over Saada and fired a ballistic missile toward Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, following recent deadly attacks on the airport.
