Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected US President Donald Trump’s call for him to be replaced, saying Ukrainians alone should choose their leader, while offering to hold an election if Russia agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.
“First of all, with all respect to President Trump, it’s up to our society, up to our people to choose one or another leader,” Zelensky told ABC News on Sunday. Ukraine has not held a presidential election since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, with voting suspended under martial law.
Trump called for new Ukrainian leadership after criticizing Kyiv’s strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he said had contributed to higher diesel prices. His administration also temporarily eased sanctions on Russian diesel, drawing criticism from Ukraine, European allies and some Republicans.
Zelensky said Ukraine remained ready for a ceasefire, including one limited to energy infrastructure, if Russia also agreed. Separately, he told Axios that Trump’s announcement of an “energy ceasefire” was “news for me,” though he said Ukraine would accept it when it began.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is due to host Zelensky at Downing Street on Wednesday and pledged “rock-solid” support for Ukraine. Britain said it would accelerate delivery of lightweight missiles used against Russian jet-powered drones and press allies to restrict maritime services supporting Russian liquefied natural gas exports. The Hindu reported that £10 million of a £45 million surface-to-air missile package would be fast-tracked.
