One person died and several others were injured Monday in an incident involving a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta, according to police.
The man was identified as Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, a 42-year-old Atlanta resident, the BBC reported. Park officials said staff found him unresponsive and not breathing beneath the ride.
Authorities and Six Flags had not officially confirmed how Kariem died, how the other people were injured or their conditions. Witnesses told several local news outlets that they saw a man fall from the Goliath roller coaster. Local television footage showed passengers being escorted from Goliath after it stopped during the ride.
Six Flags said the park and local authorities responded immediately and that the company was cooperating with the investigation. The company temporarily closed nine similar roller coasters at six parks “out of an abundance of caution.”
Goliath opened in 2006 and reaches speeds of 70 mph. Six Flags said it was “deeply saddened” by the incident and was supporting affected guests and employees.
