An inquest has opened into the death of William Harry Bruce Chapman, who was mauled by a tiger after entering its enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster on October 10.
Doncaster coroner’s court heard that Chapman climbed over two fences at about 1.30pm and entered the enclosure of Altai, a 200kg male Siberian tiger. The animal approached him, and the ensuing contact caused multiple traumatic injuries that rapidly led to his death, coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes said. Park staff secured the tiger, but paramedics pronounced Chapman dead at the scene.
The hearing was told that Chapman, a self-employed online trader living in Doncaster, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia but was highly functioning and independent. His family raised concerns about his contact with local mental health services, and the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an investigation. The coroner will consider what role, if any, his illness and prescribed medication played in his death.
Chapman’s family described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” and urged people to stop circulating footage of the attack, saying it was causing severe distress. Police also asked the public not to share the videos.
Doncaster council has begun a health and safety investigation. The park said Altai was uninjured and would not be euthanised.
