Social Security benefits to rise 3.6% in 2027
Social Security benefits will increase 3.6% in 2027, the Social Security Administration announced Wednesday, giving retired and disabled beneficiaries an average increase of about $75 a month.
Nearly 72 million Social Security recipients will receive the higher payments beginning in January. About 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income recipients will see their increase starting Dec. 31, 2026. Some people receive both benefits.
The adjustment, the largest since the 8.7% increase in 2023, is up from 2.8% for 2026. It is based on inflation during July, August and September as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. Separate inflation data released Wednesday showed overall consumer prices rose 3.7% in September from a year earlier.
