Cockroach Janata Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were remanded to five days of judicial custody on Wednesday, October 14, after Delhi Police accused them and other party members of entering the Jantar Mantar area without authorization. They will be held in Tihar Jail.
Police registered two FIRs against 14 CJP members, alleging trespass, disobedience of official orders and obstruction of officers. According to police, the group reached Jantar Mantar on October 13 through private premises and obstructed personnel who attempted to stop them. The site had been de-notified as a designated protest venue the previous day.
Das, Ranka and CJP national organization in-charge Ajinkya Shinde were subsequently placed under preventive arrest. Police said they had repeatedly attempted to disturb public peace and violate the law, including through social-media activity. Shinde was released after furnishing a personal bond and ₹5,000 surety and undertaking to maintain peace and good behavior for six months.
The arrests followed demonstrations organized by the CJP against the Special Intensive Revision and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had earlier said Shinde would lead the movement after Dipke, Das and Ranka were detained when their flight from Mumbai arrived in Delhi on October 10. Shinde, a former Aam Aadmi Party worker and IT professional, has been associated with the CJP since its formation.
