Eliud Kipchoge won the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 10 seconds, breaking the race record by two seconds and securing his first marathon victory since Berlin in 2023.

The 41-year-old Kenyan, a two-time Olympic champion and former world record-holder, pulled away after 30 kilometres. The course included part of the Australian Formula One circuit at Albert Park and finished inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where Kipchoge slowed to wave to spectators.

“I believe that my body is still peaking — still able to compete with the next generation,” Kipchoge told reporters. “I increased the pace after 30km, to see whether I can run well and beat the race record. My plan went well.”

Australian Thomas Do Canto finished second in 2:10:35, with compatriot Reece Edwards third in 2:14:33.

New Zealand’s Camille French won the women’s race in 2:28:25. Australian Sinead Diver placed second in 2:28:49, and Ireland’s Nichola Sheridan was third in 2:29:13.

Melbourne was the third stop in Kipchoge’s planned two-year tour to complete a marathon on every continent, including Antarctica, following races in South Africa and Brazil.
