Remnants of Hurricane Isaias moved toward the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic on Sunday after the storm struck the Florida Panhandle as a Category 2 hurricane, killing at least four people and causing widespread power outages.
Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, on Friday evening with sustained winds of 105 mph. The storm snapped trees, damaged buildings and knocked out electricity across parts of Florida and Alabama. Nearly 396,000 customers in the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama remained without power early Sunday, down from about 780,000 customers across Florida, Alabama and Georgia late Saturday morning.
Two people died when trees fell onto homes in Escambia County, Florida, and Birmingham, Alabama. Florida authorities also linked a death to carbon monoxide fumes from a generator operating in a garage, while Alabama officials attributed another death to a vehicle crash involving a downed tree in Barbour County. Four relatives of the Florida generator victim were treated and expected to survive.
The National Weather Service warned that heavy rain could cause isolated flash and urban flooding as the system traveled north. Gusty winds could also bring additional downed trees and power lines, while dangerous surf and rip currents were expected along the Gulf and southeastern Atlantic coasts. Parts of the Carolinas and Virginia faced a tornado threat Sunday.
President Donald Trump approved emergency declarations for Florida, Alabama and Georgia. He also canceled plans to attend Saturday’s Alabama-Georgia football game, saying emergency personnel needed to remain focused on the storm.
