A court in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, sentenced Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla to death Wednesday for the murder of Rastogi’s husband, Saurabh Rajput, whose dismembered body was discovered in a blue drum filled with liquid cement at the couple’s home last year.
The court had found Rastogi and Shukla guilty on September 30. Police alleged that Rastogi was in a relationship with Shukla. According to The Indian Express, Saurabh and Rastogi married in 2016 after eloping to persuade their families to accept their relationship.
Advocate Krishan Kumar Dubey told reporters that each defendant was also ordered to pay fines of Rs 50,000 under Section 302 and Rs 20,000 under Section 238A. He said the defence had argued that nobody witnessed the killing and that both defendants have daughters, but the court accepted the prosecution’s evidence.
Dubey described the killing as premeditated and said Saurabh’s body had been cut into three parts before the remains were concealed in the drum. Rastogi gave birth to her second daughter in March while held at Meerut’s Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail. Dubey said the child could remain with her mother for six years.
