Delhi Police detained leaders of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party after protesters entered the barricaded Jantar Mantar site in New Delhi on Tuesday, defying restrictions imposed during demonstrations over alleged voter-roll manipulation.
Video posted by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke showed protesters climbing over barricades, running into the site and waving India’s national flag before police pursued them. The group said Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde were among those detained. A magistrate later sent Ranka and Das to five days of judicial custody, while Shinde was released on a personal bond, according to Scroll.in. The allegations against them include trespassing, violating a bond and obstructing a public servant.
Delhi Police had removed Jantar Mantar from its list of designated protest sites on Monday and named three alternative locations. The area had been sealed with metal barricades and guarded by police.
CJP and opposition groups are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that a special revision of electoral rolls improperly removed voters and benefited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party. The Election Commission of India has denied wrongdoing.
Opposition figures, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, condemned the arrests. Gandhi said waving the national flag during a peaceful protest was not a crime and argued that Jantar Mantar belonged to the public.
