Houthis strike Yemen government palace area in Aden, killing two guards

Yemen’s Houthis launched missiles and drones at the al-Maashiq presidential palace area in Aden on Thursday, killing two security guards as fighting with Saudi-backed government forces intensified.

Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani said five missiles targeted the palace, the headquarters of Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Prime Minister Shaya al-Zindani and other government members were safe, officials said. The government reported additional injuries among security personnel; accounts put the number wounded at between six and 10. Witnesses reported several explosions and smoke near the compound, although the extent of damage and whether the palace itself was hit remained unclear.

The Houthis said they targeted a military operations headquarters led by Saudi officers and weapons depots at the palace. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree described Saudi military positions as legitimate targets.

The strike followed a Houthi attack on Aden’s international airport on Wednesday and escalating combat near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Government forces, backed by Saudi-led coalition air support, have mounted a counteroffensive around Mocha and other strategic coastal territory captured by the Houthis in September.

On Tuesday, the Saudi-led coalition struck fuel and energy facilities in Houthi-controlled areas, including Sanaa, Saada and Dhamar, saying they supported missile and drone operations. The Houthis denied that a targeted Yemen Petroleum Company facility had military value and threatened retaliation against Saudi airports, refineries and oil installations.
