At least 13 people, most or all of them children, died after a country-made boat capsized in the Ganga River in Bihar’s Vaishali district late Tuesday, October 13.
The vessel overturned in the Raghopur area while carrying villagers to a feast in a nearby village, district magistrate Varsha Singh said. Officials reported that 13 bodies had been recovered. Accounts differed slightly on the number rescued: police told Reuters that six people survived, while Singh was quoted by ANI as saying seven had been rescued. Survivors were taken for medical treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and announced payments of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the family of each person killed and ₹50,000 for each injured person. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced an additional ₹4 lakh for each bereaved family and directed officials to expedite rescue work and treatment for the injured.
