Pakistan’s federal government has taken direct control of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, suspending the provincial administration led by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party amid militant violence and protests demanding Khan’s release.

President Asif Ali Zardari issued the emergency proclamation on Sunday, October 11, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet. The order invoked Articles 232 and 234 of Pakistan’s Constitution, transferring provincial functions to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and legislative authority to Parliament. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the arrangement could remain in place for up to six months, subject to required parliamentary approvals.

The government said terrorist attacks had intensified and accused the PTI administration of failing to cooperate adequately with counterterrorism efforts. PTI rejected that justification, describing the takeover as an undemocratic attempt to halt a planned march to Islamabad seeking Khan’s release.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said on Monday that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had been detained. The federal government also authorized Pakistan Army personnel and assets to assist civilian authorities for the duration of the emergency. Roads were blocked and security increased in Peshawar and elsewhere in the province.

PTI leaders and several bar associations condemned the proclamation. The Lahore High Court Bar Association and Lahore Bar Association said they would challenge it in the Supreme Court, while lawyers questioned whether the constitutional requirements for imposing emergency rule had been met.
