Two container ships have sunk near the Strait of Hormuz amid an increase in attacks on commercial shipping, according to maritime authorities and news reports.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said a container ship carrying more than 2,500 containers struck a naval mine on Wednesday while using what it called an “illegal and dangerous route.” The vessel caught fire and sank in waters south of the strait, the Guard said. Iran did not identify the ship or report what happened to its crew.

The Guardian reported that the Iranian statement apparently referred to the Singapore-flagged GFS Pride, which sank Wednesday after being attacked the previous day. The Antigua- and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao also sank near the strait after being hit by a projectile on September 23, according to International Maritime Organization data cited by the newspaper.

Accounts of the attacks differed. Iran attributed the loss it reported to a naval mine, while the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations monitor indicated that the two ships had been struck by unidentified projectiles. The Hindu said there was no immediate independent verification of Iran’s account and that UKMTO had not issued a report confirming the claimed mine sinking.

UKMTO recorded at least five incidents involving tankers and other commercial vessels in the Hormuz area over the preceding 48 hours, including drone strikes, according to The Guardian. Al Jazeera also reported that video showed containers and debris floating in the area following recent attacks.
