Trump cancels plan to livestream Nidal Hasan’s execution

President Donald Trump said Thursday that the execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, will not be livestreamed.

Hasan remains scheduled to be executed by firing squad on Dec. 3. Trump said immediate family members of the victims may attend in person if they choose.

Trump wrote on social media that broadcasting the execution “might have been a strong deterrent,” but said many “well meaning people” opposed watching Hasan die. The decision reverses an earlier Pentagon plan announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who had argued that making the execution public would demonstrate the consequences of such attacks.

The proposal drew opposition from Democratic and Republican lawmakers, religious leaders, rights groups and international observers. Vice President JD Vance said he would not watch a broadcast, while House Speaker Mike Johnson cited concerns that video of the execution could become a recruiting tool for terrorists.

A Pentagon spokesperson told The Guardian that Trump and Hegseth discussed the decision before the announcement and that Hegseth supports it.

Hasan was convicted by a military jury in 2013 of premeditated murder and attempted murder for the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting at the Texas military installation. The attack also injured 32 people. Hasan was paralyzed from the waist down after being shot by law enforcement during the attack.
