A 45-year-old man shot and killed eight people at his home in Erie, Pennsylvania, before apparently taking his own life, police said Saturday.
The shooting occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Friday on the city’s East Side. Officers responding to a gunfire alert found two women dead outside the home. Police and tactical officers surrounded the house, obtained a search warrant and later entered, finding six more victims and the suspected gunman, who had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The victims included a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a woman who was eight months pregnant. The other victims were adults between 19 and 51 years old. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said the gunman was related to seven of those killed; the eighth was a family friend.
Investigators recovered video and audio evidence that included muffled gunshots from inside the house before two distressed women arrived and tried to enter. Lorah said the gunman came outside, shot the women and returned to the home.
Authorities have not publicly identified the gunman or victims, and no motive has been announced. Police said there was no continuing threat to the public. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro offered state support to Erie, while Mayor Daria Devlin said the community was grieving with the victims’ families and others affected by the shooting.
