Indian authorities have ordered Bollywood actor Imran Khan to leave the country by October 28 after he participated in an October 10 protest in Mumbai calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Khan, a U.S. citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India card, was briefly detained with other demonstrators at August Kranti Maidan. An OCI card allows eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin to live and work in India but does not confer Indian citizenship or voting rights.
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office served Khan with a notice alleging that his participation in the demonstration violated rules governing foreign nationals. The action followed a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya, who accused Khan of involvement in efforts to create disorder.
Khan said at the protest that he was attending as a Mumbai resident and was not representing any organization. “I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted, why people’s voices are being suppressed,” he told reporters.
His lawyer said no law or rule governing OCI cardholders prohibits them from joining a protest and described the order as drastic. Khan plans to challenge the notice in the Bombay High Court.
The demonstration was part of protests over the Election Commission’s handling of electoral-roll revisions and allegations of vote fraud. The commission has denied the allegations.
