Apple unveiled HomeView, its first smart display, at a Tuesday event in New York, alongside an updated HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K and a collection of smart-home accessories.
The $299 HomeView has a seven-inch Liquid Retina touchscreen and comes in tabletop and wall-mounted versions. Both are scheduled for release November 13, with preorders already open in several markets. The device is offered in silver, starlight, rose pink and space gray.
HomeView can display customizable Apple Watch-style faces featuring clocks, photos, weather information, widgets and animations. It also supports FaceTime through a 12-megapixel front camera with Center Stage, along with Messages, Safari, music, podcasts, recipes and controls for compatible home devices. Apple’s software does not include a conventional App Store, though selected third-party and CarPlay-compatible apps can be made available.
The display can recognize as many as six household members and switch from a shared screen to personalized calendars, messages, reminders and notifications. Apple says personal information is retrieved from a user’s iPhone or iPad rather than stored on HomeView and disappears when that person walks away.
Siri AI provides conversational requests, personal context and smart-home controls. Some advanced features require an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, beginning with the iPhone 15 Pro. HomeView will not initially launch in the European Union because Siri AI is not currently available there, according to Apple. The company has not given a date for an EU release.
