President Donald Trump said Thursday that the Dec. 3 execution of Fort Hood gunman Nidal Malik Hasan will not be livestreamed, reversing a plan announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He said immediate family members of Hasan’s victims may attend the execution in person if they choose.
Hegseth had said the execution would be made public so people could see that such attacks carry serious consequences. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth supports Trump’s decision and that the two discussed it before the announcement, according to CBS News.
The proposed broadcast drew opposition from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, religious leaders, retired military officers and international observers. Critics argued that televising the execution could turn it into entertainment, aid extremist recruitment or make Hasan a martyr. An ABC News-Washington Post-Ipsos poll cited by Al Jazeera found 80% of respondents opposed a livestream and 18% supported it.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was convicted in 2013 of killing 13 people and wounding more than 30 others during a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. His execution by firing squad remains scheduled for Dec. 3.
