North Korea tested two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles in waters off its east coast on Wednesday, state media reported Thursday.
The Korean Central News Agency said the exercise examined the readiness of underwater combat systems, trained the navy for strategic missions and demonstrated the reliability of the country’s deterrent. It said the launches did not affect the security of neighboring countries. KCNA identified one of the weapons as a Pulhwasal-3-31, according to Al Jazeera.
Senior military officials, including Workers’ Party Central Military Commission member Kim Jong-sik and Missile Administration director-general Jang Chang-ha, observed the test, Yonhap reported.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it monitored the launches from preparations through the cruise and terminal phases. Its assessment was that one missile type was fired from a vertical launch system and the other through a torpedo tube, The Japan Times reported. Analysts cited by the newspaper said KCNA photographs appeared to show the launches came from the Kim Kun Ok Hero, a modified diesel-powered submarine unveiled in 2023, though KCNA provided few technical details.
The test followed North Korea’s launch of tactical ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea on Monday. Pyongyang said that earlier launch was intended to confirm progress in upgrading a key technical component.
