Four members of NASA’s Crew-12 mission returned safely to Earth on Thursday after nearly eight months aboard the International Space Station, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off Los Angeles in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
The crew included NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, the mission commander, and Jack Hathaway, the pilot; European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot; and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. Their capsule left orbit about 45 minutes before landing, endured temperatures of up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit during reentry and descended under four parachutes before reaching the ocean.
Crew-12 launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in February and docked with the station the following day. During the mission, the crew carried out dozens of scientific experiments, including research into stem cells, crystal growth and bone loss in microgravity.
The astronauts also performed maintenance and upgrades outside the station. Meir completed four spacewalks totaling more than 27 hours, while Adenot conducted three.
The Crew-12 astronauts departed after handing station duties to Crew-13, whose three astronauts and one cosmonaut arrived last week for a planned six-month rotation.
