Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for authorities to identify and prosecute Israeli military personnel who testified anonymously in “NAZA,” a documentary examining Israel’s use of surveillance, targeting technology and air strikes in Gaza.
According to The Irish Times, Netanyahu directed Israel’s attorney general and the Shin Bet security service to uncover the interviewees’ identities over alleged harm to Israel’s diplomatic and security interests. Culture Minister Miki Zohar has accused directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor of treason and called for their citizenship to be revoked. Protesters have also demonstrated outside the home of Szor’s parents.
The film, whose title is a Hebrew acronym for “collateral damage,” is based on interviews with 24 Israeli military intelligence officers and soldiers. It describes the tapping of civilians’ phones, computer programs used to help select targets and standards governing the risk to noncombatants in air strikes.
“NAZA” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received a special jury prize. Abraham told The Irish Times that the intensity of the Israeli government’s response had been unexpected and had raised fears for the filmmakers and their families.
The Hollywood Reporter said the documentary has earned more than $500,000 without a distributor after prompting protests.
