A roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, killed 32 pupils and a female teacher on Thursday, according to an updated toll from Lady Reading Hospital. The children were reported to be between seven and 14 years old.

The collapse occurred during classes at the Al-Khair Education Centre. Rescue officials said the roof of an upper floor fell onto classrooms below, causing both storeys to cave in and trapping children under rubble. Emergency crews spent several hours clearing the site, and Peshawar Deputy Commissioner Afaq Wazir later said the rescue operation had concluded.

Reports varied on the number of people injured, ranging from more than 30 to about 50. Lady Reading Hospital said it received 20 injured children, most of whom were later discharged, while three remained under treatment with severe head injuries.

Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed Ahmed said the building had a weak structure and that construction had placed excessive weight on its roof. CNN cited a local rescue official as saying heavy overnight rainfall had destabilized the building. Authorities have opened an investigation, and police said the school’s owner had been arrested.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to provide medical care to the injured and promised a thorough investigation. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also ordered structural safety audits of educational institutions across the province.
