Eva Marie Saint, the actor who won an Academy Award for her film debut in *On the Waterfront* and later starred opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s *North by Northwest*, died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102.
Family representative Jeff Sanderson said Saint died of natural causes while surrounded by family and loved ones.
Saint began her career onstage and in live television before director Elia Kazan cast her as Edie Doyle in the 1954 drama *On the Waterfront*. Her portrayal of a Catholic schoolgirl seeking justice after her longshoreman brother is murdered earned her the Oscar for best supporting actress. Her co-star Marlon Brando also won an Academy Award for the film.
In 1959, Saint took on a sharply different role as the mysterious Eve Kendall opposite Grant in Hitchcock’s spy thriller *North by Northwest*. Her other films included *Exodus*, with Paul Newman, and *All Fall Down*, with Warren Beatty.
Saint limited her film work while raising two children with television and stage director Jeffrey Hayden, whom she married in 1951. They remained married until his death in 2016. She increasingly worked in television from the 1970s and won an Emmy in 1990 for the miniseries *People Like Us*.
Her later screen appearances included *Because of Winn-Dixie*, *Superman Returns* and *Winter’s Tale*. Her acting career spanned more than seven decades and continued into her 90s.
