Federal agents searched Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home Monday as part of an investigation into her immigration and citizenship records, according to multiple news reports.
CNN and The Washington Post reported that investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father misstated her birth date when she became a U.S. citizen in 2000, including whether she was presented as a minor when she was already an adult. CNN said the inquiry also concerns possible false statements on later government documents and a potential broader conspiracy. At least a dozen subpoenas, mostly involving relatives, were issued beginning last week, CNN reported.
A federal magistrate judge approved the warrant only after limiting investigators’ access to records protected by Omar’s constitutional role as a member of Congress, according to CNN. The Justice Department has not publicly detailed the investigation, and no charges were reported.
Omar came to the United States as a Somali refugee with her family in 1995 and has been a citizen for more than 25 years. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have publicly accused her of immigration fraud, while critics characterized the search as politically motivated because it occurred less than a month before voting ends in an election in which Omar is seeking reelection.
The raid drew criticism from members of Minneapolis’ Somali community. Former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a longtime Omar critic, also accused the administration of staging political theater rather than addressing voters’ economic concerns.
