Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg joined students outside Paul Eluard high school in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis on Tuesday as demonstrations over conditions in French schools continued nationwide.
“Young people are not being included in the conversation. Our future is being robbed away from us,” Thunberg, 23, told reporters. Lawyers formed a human chain near the school amid allegations of police brutality during the protests.
The movement began late last month, with students demanding action on teacher shortages, deteriorating school buildings, overcrowded schedules and other education issues. Protesters have blockaded hundreds of high schools with bins and security barriers. Thousands marched through central Paris on Tuesday, while rallies were also held in cities including Nantes and Strasbourg. University students, teachers, unions and the left-wing France Unbowed party have backed the demonstrations.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray said about 200 schools were closed, while the Education Ministry put the number at 214, most of them high schools. Geffray said some schools near march routes had shut to avoid damage. The student union l’Union Étudiante said 90% of universities were disrupted or closed in solidarity.
President Emmanuel Macron called for restraint on Monday, saying the issues required “time, consultations, discussion and respect.” Justice Ministry figures cited by multiple outlets showed more than 6,800 people, mainly minors, had been taken into police custody during the protests. Authorities have opened investigations into 24 allegations of police brutality.
