Pope Leo XIV is recovering at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung following a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer.
The 71-year-old pontiff announced Sunday that doctors had discovered a small, localized lung nodule during a recent examination. He said it had been detected at a very early stage and was well contained. The operation took place Tuesday and proceeded as expected, according to the Vatican.
In a medical update Friday, Pope Leo’s doctors said blood tests and chest X-rays showed steady improvement and that he could carry out normal daily activities without assistance. Vatican photographs showed him standing and celebrating Mass at the hospital. He is expected to deliver the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer, although officials had not determined whether he would speak from the hospital or at St. Peter’s Square.
Doctors are awaiting biopsy results that could indicate whether the cancer has spread and whether further treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation, is needed. The Vatican initially estimated that his hospital recovery would last about a week.
Pope Leo has canceled audiences through October 20. Planning is continuing for his scheduled November 6-17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, but the Vatican has not confirmed whether the visit will proceed.
