Pope Leo XIV is recovering as expected after surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, his doctors said Friday, as the Vatican released the first images of him since the operation.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent surgery Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after doctors identified a suspected cancerous nodule. Tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. Doctors said a chest X-ray showed good recovery of the operated lung and that Leo’s post-operative tests remained within normal ranges. He is undergoing respiratory physiotherapy and can perform daily activities independently.
Further test results are pending to determine the cancer’s molecular characteristics, whether it spread beyond the removed lobe and whether additional treatment will be needed.
Photographs released by the Vatican showed Leo standing and celebrating Mass in a makeshift chapel on the hospital’s 10th floor. He also resumed reviewing documents and spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the Vatican, Leo urged a local ceasefire around the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky to permit civilian evacuations and deliveries of food and medicine.
The Vatican said Leo plans to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer Sunday, his first public appearance since surgery. Preparations are continuing for his scheduled November visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. He is expected to remain hospitalized until at least October 20.
