A 16-year-old former student opened fire Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children and a teacher before an armed parent fatally shot him, police said.
The children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11. A 7-year-old remained in critical condition Friday, while a 54-year-old teacher had serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to an updated account reported by The Guardian.
Police identified the attacker as Griffin J. John II. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenager climbed a fence, shot through locked glass doors and entered a classroom, where all the victims were shot. Investigators recovered a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun and additional ammunition. Law enforcement sources told CBS News and the Associated Press that the gun had been purchased by the teenager’s mother.
Krantz said an uninjured teacher threw a phone at the gunman, tackled him and tried to disarm him. A 36-year-old parent who had heard gunfire entered the school with a legally owned handgun and shot the attacker during the struggle. The man’s family identified him as Kaylub Giamanco, whose two daughters attend the school, though authorities had not officially released his name.
Police were examining the attacker’s electronic devices and online activity. No motive had been announced. Schools across the Bend-La Pine district were closed Friday as residents gathered at memorials and vigils for the victims.
