A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher and critically wounded another child and teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, authorities said. The children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11; NBC News reported that the injured child was 7.
The first 911 call came shortly after 1 p.m. from a person outside the school who reported being shot at by someone carrying a long gun. Additional calls followed from inside the building. NBC News reported that the attacker shot through a locked door to enter the school.
Police said an armed community member pursued the gunman into the school and fatally shot him before officers arrived. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek thanked the person for intervening. On Friday, President Donald Trump called the bystander a “great hero” and said the attack could have been worse.
Three senior law enforcement sources identified the suspected shooter to NBC News as John J. Griffin II. Authorities had not publicly identified a motive or said whether he had a connection to the school. NBC News, citing law enforcement officials, reported that Griffin used a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother around his birthday in August. Officials said she was cooperating with investigators.
The elementary school serves about 450 students from kindergarten through fifth grade and has approximately 40 staff members. Students were evacuated by bus to another location to reunite with their families.
