A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday before an armed bystander shot and killed him, authorities said.
The children killed were 5, 8 and 11 years old, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized with critical injuries. Officials had not released their names.
Police received an initial 911 call shortly before 1 p.m. from someone who reported being fired upon while inside a vehicle. Dispatchers then received dozens of calls saying the gunman had entered the school. Police said he forced his way inside by firing at locked doors and used a “long gun,” a category that includes rifles and shotguns.
A community member who saw the gunman enter followed him into the building and shot him soon after police arrived, according to local officials cited by NPR. People reported that the bystander was the father of two students at the school. Authorities had not publicly identified either the bystander or the suspected shooter.
Police said the teenager lived in Bend. His relationship to the school, if any, remained unclear.
