A 36-year-old father fatally shot a teenage gunman after the teen killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, authorities said.
Police identified the gunman as Griffin J. John II, 16, a former student at the school. Investigators said he entered the campus on Oct. 15 by throwing a shotgun over a fence and climbing after it, then fired at a passing pickup truck before shooting through glass doors and entering the building. He opened fire in a special-needs classroom, where all the victims were shot.
The children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11. The youngest was identified as Rhoam Summer, while the families of the other two children requested that their names not be released. Meghan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher, was also killed. A 7-year-old girl was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, and a 54-year-old teacher suffered serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police said another teacher confronted the gunman and fought him for the shotgun. Kaylub Giamanco, whose two daughters attend the school, had stopped after seeing the teen shoot at the truck. Armed with a legally owned pistol, Giamanco entered the school, encountered the struggle and shot the gunman several times, according to police.
Investigators said the teen fired as many as 15 rounds, and 44 additional rounds were recovered. Authorities have not announced a motive. Two law-enforcement officials told NBC News that the shotgun had been purchased by the teen’s mother around his birthday in August.
