US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday waiving sanctions and tariffs aimed at Russian energy revenue, following an agreement under which Moscow would release diesel onto global markets. The Taipei Times reported that sanctions were temporarily lifted to allow about 2 million barrels onto the market immediately, with roughly 13 million barrels committed overall.
The agreement drew criticism from Ukrainian officials and European leaders. Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Ukrainian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, told France 24 that lifting sanctions would give Russia additional money that could be used for missiles and drones. European Council President Antonio Costa said it was not the time to ease pressure on Russia, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged EU leaders to provide nearly $80 billion more for Kyiv next year.
Relations between Trump and Zelenskyy have also deteriorated over Ukraine’s strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Trump accused Kyiv of violating an “energy ceasefire” that he had announced, while Zelenskyy said he was acting solely in Ukraine’s interests.
Reports also differed over disruptions to Ukraine’s use of the US-controlled Starshield satellite system. The Guardian, citing Reuters, said the White House ordered restrictions that impeded Ukrainian drones. Trump denied intervening, according to CNN, while Dawn reported that a US official also denied his involvement and SpaceX chief Elon Musk said his company was not responsible.
