Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to European allies for additional support as his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump deteriorated over Washington’s recent dealings with Moscow.
At an EU summit in Brussels on Friday, Zelenskyy requested an additional €70 billion to fund Ukraine’s war effort next year. Asked at a news conference whether Trump was making him a scapegoat for domestic political problems, Zelenskyy paused and smiled as the room laughed, then said, “This is my answer.”
Zelenskyy criticized Trump’s decision to waive sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia after striking a diesel-supply deal with Moscow. He called the waiver a mistake that would encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue the war and said restricting Ukrainian attacks while easing pressure on Russia would not end the fighting.
On Sunday, Zelenskyy told NBC News that Ukraine still trusted the United States and its bipartisan support but hoped Trump would reverse his decisions. He warned that formal U.S. support for Russia would be a “historic mistake,” while saying Ukraine remained ready to pursue a negotiated end to the war.
Zelenskyy also spoke Sunday with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, discussing the conflict and deliveries of Patriot air-defense systems. He accused Russia of violating a U.S.-announced energy ceasefire 76 times. Russian attacks left tens of thousands without electricity in several Ukrainian regions, Ukrainian officials said, while Russia reported that Ukrainian drone strikes hit energy facilities in Saint Petersburg, killing one person.
