Guatemalan police arrested a 64-year-old man sought by US authorities in connection with a murder case, according to reports citing the National Civil Police.
Officers from the Transnational Anti-Gang Center detained the Guatemalan national on October 12 in San Martín Zapotitlán, in the southwestern department of Retalhuleu. State news agency AGN identified him as Bustamante, also known as Alex Amado Bustamante Gavidia, while Prensa Libre reported his first name as Alis.
Prensa Libre said the US request concerns a murder charge under New Jersey law and that authorities accuse the man of killing his wife in the United States before moving to Guatemala. He has not been convicted and is presumed innocent.
AGN reported that the detention was Guatemala’s 39th arrest for extradition to the United States in 2026. The arrest begins a judicial process in which a Guatemalan judge must determine whether the extradition request can proceed. The accused may contest extradition or consent to being transferred.
