Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan died Monday morning after a brief illness, his family announced. He was 71.
Uduaghan, born October 22, 1954, served as Delta State commissioner for health from 1999 to 2003 and secretary to the state government from 2003 to 2007. He was elected governor in 2007 and served two terms before leaving office in 2015.
In a statement signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan, the family described him as a father, brother, uncle and patriarch whose public service touched people across Delta State and Nigeria. The family said his death had left relatives devastated.
President Bola Tinubu called Uduaghan’s death a major loss and said his administration pursued improvements in infrastructure, healthcare and residents’ welfare. Tinubu also said Uduaghan remained active in Delta State’s political and socio-economic affairs after leaving office, contributing to democratic governance and public service.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described Uduaghan as a leader who worked across ethnic divisions and contributed to the state’s infrastructure. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan remembered him as a father figure and elder statesman, while the Christian Association of Nigeria praised his role in promoting dialogue, confidence-building and national unity during a period of political tension.
Condolences were extended to Uduaghan’s wife, Roli, his children, relatives, associates and the people of Delta State.
