Cockroach Janta Party leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were sent to five days in judicial custody on Wednesday after Delhi Police arrested them for entering Jantar Mantar to protest its removal as a designated protest site. A third leader, Ajinkya Shinde, was released on a personal bond, according to the campaign.
Ranka, Das, Shinde and other campaign members were detained Tuesday after they entered the site. The leaders are accused of trespassing, violating a bond and obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duties, the campaign’s legal affairs head Ratna Singh said. Police described the arrests as preventive, ANI reported.
Singh alleged that the three leaders were denied access to lawyers until late Tuesday and called the arrests illegal, saying they had gone to Jantar Mantar to hoist the national flag. Rahul Gandhi criticized the detentions, saying peaceful protest and waving the tricolour were not crimes.
The arrests came after a magistrate had conditionally released Ranka and Das on Sunday, along with CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, requiring them not to breach the peace for one year. They had been detained after landing in Delhi ahead of a protest seeking Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Jantar Mantar was denotified as a designated protest location on Sunday. Delhi Police later told the High Court that authorities were considering alternative venues with better facilities for public demonstrations and safety.
