Indonesian security forces arrested a 32-year-old man identified as PW over the 2021 burning of a PT Unggul camp in Puncak district, Central Papua, the Damai Cartenz task force said.

PW was detained at a hideout in Gome subdistrict at 10:45 a.m. local time on October 19 and taken to Puncak Police headquarters for questioning. Police seized an axe, a machete and a mobile phone during the arrest.

The task force said PW is suspected of belonging to Kodap XVIII, an armed group led by Numbuk Telenggen that operates in Puncak. Investigators are examining his alleged role in the arson and whether he is linked to other crimes in the district. Three other suspects were arrested in the case between February 2024 and June 2025.

No deaths were reported in the fire, but it destroyed an employee dormitory, fuel and generator warehouses, and several pieces of heavy equipment and vehicles, according to the task force. PW could face up to nine years in prison under Indonesia’s Criminal Code if convicted.

Damai Cartenz operations chief Faizal Ramadhani said the case should be handled transparently and in accordance with the law and human rights standards.
