Sudanese drone strike kills at least 153 at Abyei market, local official says

A drone strike on a market in the disputed Abyei region killed at least 153 people on Monday, according to Yohanna Akol Ngor, the local administration’s caretaker information minister. Ngor said the toll could rise as fires continued to burn at Amiet Market, north of Abyei town.

South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry blamed Sudan’s military, saying drones struck several locations in the market. It summoned Sudan’s ambassador and called on Khartoum to refrain from actions endangering civilians and property. Local authorities said women, children, elderly people, merchants, South Sudanese returnees and Sudanese refugees were among the casualties.

Sudan’s armed forces had not issued an official response. However, a senior Sudanese military officer, speaking anonymously to The Associated Press, acknowledged that the army conducted a strike targeting fuel tankers arriving from South Sudan that it said were destined for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The officer denied that civilians were targeted. Unnamed diplomats told Reuters that the strike hit a fuel depot in a market previously used to supply RSF fighters.

The United Nations condemned drone attacks near Amiet Market and Todach, saying dozens of civilians had been killed and many injured, while noting that its peacekeeping mission was still verifying casualties. Doctors Without Borders said it was treating more than 20 wounded people, including patients with severe burns.

Abyei is claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan and lies beside Sudan’s Kordofan region, a major front in the war between Sudan’s army and the RSF.
