Drone strikes in the disputed Abyei region and Sudan’s West Kordofan state reportedly killed more than 300 people across two days, with South Sudanese officials and other sources accusing Sudan’s military of carrying out the attacks.
A strike hit Amiet Market in Abyei around midday Monday, killing at least 153 people, according to Yohana Akol Ngor, the region’s caretaker information minister. Witness accounts cited by Deutsche Welle indicated that a fuel depot was struck, causing a large fire. Ngor said about 8,000 people were displaced, while Médecins Sans Frontières reported treating more than 20 wounded patients, including people with burns.
South Sudan summoned Sudan’s ambassador to protest the Abyei attack. A Sudanese military source told the BBC that the army carried it out, describing the market as a fuel supply site for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Other reports attributed responsibility to Sudan’s military without presenting evidence.
On Sunday evening, separate strikes in West Kordofan killed 150 people, sources told the Sudan War Observatory. The monitoring group said a truck carrying about 200 mourners was hit as it reached Al-Dabab, killing 145 people, and that another five died when a funeral tent was struck. About 150 others were injured. The group also reported a strike on a market in Al-Mujlad but did not give a casualty count.
Sudan’s army had not responded directly to allegations concerning the West Kordofan strikes, but said it does not attack civilians even when RSF fighters are believed to be among them.
