Sisi says any Egyptian military support for Saudi Arabia would be defensive

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said Wednesday that any military support for Saudi Arabia would be limited to defending the kingdom’s territory and borders and would not include an attack on Yemen.
Sisi has asked Egypt’s parliament to authorize the armed forces to assist Saudi Arabia if Riyadh requests support amid intensified attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis. He said Egypt could similarly defend another Arab country if asked, describing the policy as part of shared Arab security.
Parliament on Monday postponed its vote until October 26, extending deliberations over the proposed authorization. Under Egypt’s constitution, deploying troops on a combat mission abroad requires approval from two-thirds of the 596-member House of Representatives. The National Defence Council, chaired by Sisi, approved the proposal on Sunday and pledged “all necessary and possible forms of support” for Saudi security, territory and Islamic holy sites.
No formal Saudi request for Egyptian assistance has been announced, and parliamentary authorization would not automatically result in a deployment. The opposition Egyptian Social Democratic Party urged its lawmakers to abstain, saying legislators lacked details about the mission’s objectives, duration, cost and risks.
The debate follows recent Houthi attacks on Riyadh’s international airport and Saudi Aramco after renewed fighting in Yemen. Saudi authorities said 13 people were killed in the October 10 airport attack.
