Saudi Arabia said it intercepted and destroyed four drones over Riyadh, the Eastern Province and the south amid continuing attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement. Residents of Riyadh briefly received mobile alerts warning of a hostile aerial threat, while remote learning was extended in the capital and nearby Diriyah.
The latest interceptions followed intensified Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi airports, oil facilities and transport infrastructure. An October 10 strike near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300, according to reports, although some outlets put the death toll at 13. Foreign missions have issued safety guidance, with India advising its nationals to shelter indoors, avoid windows and follow Saudi authorities’ instructions during alerts.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Cairo was prepared to take measures to defend Saudi Arabia if requested, while stressing that Egypt was not seeking to attack anyone. Egypt’s parliament was due to hold an emergency session after Sisi requested authorization to act in the kingdom’s defense.
Britain also announced that RAF Typhoon fighters would conduct defensive air missions over Saudi cities and critical infrastructure. The aircraft will not carry out offensive strikes against the Houthis, the UK said. An Atlas A400M transport aircraft and British military advisers will also support the deployment.
French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Riyadh on Wednesday for an unscheduled meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with his office describing the visit as a demonstration of solidarity with Saudi Arabia over the Houthi attacks.
