Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Nordic leaders in Oslo on Tuesday for talks aimed at advancing efforts to end the war with Russia. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb attended, while U.S. envoy Jared Kushner joined online, according to the Norwegian government.
After the meeting, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was not losing the war but was “losing people and time.” He said the discussions produced “some clear ideas of how to get peace” and that he had sought to put diplomacy on a “more constructive path,” according to France 24.
The talks followed renewed friction between Kyiv and Washington. Zelenskyy told U.S. senators on Monday that the Pentagon was delaying interceptor missiles purchased by European countries and that transfers of Patriot interceptors from European stockpiles were awaiting U.S. approval. The United States has denied changing its intelligence-sharing arrangements with Ukraine.
President Donald Trump criticized Zelenskyy and said it was time for someone else to negotiate on Ukraine’s behalf. Trump also said a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China next month could cover the war.
On Wednesday, Zelenskyy said he would be open to freezing the current front lines as a way to end the conflict while retaining much of Ukraine’s territory, telling Fox News, “Right now, we have to freeze, and I think this is a real way to end this war.”
